Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has introduced a new Helio chipset aimed at mid-range smartphones. The latest chip, named Helio P65, is more of a minor upgrade when compared to the existing Helio P60. We can expect the first mobile devices featuring the Helio P65 to arrive before the end of the third quarter.
MediaTek’s latest mid-range mobile chipset uses two ARM Cortex-A75 cores and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores. In comparison, the current Helio P60 and P70 chipsets use four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. Thanks to the newer ARM CPU cores, the Helio P65 should be able to deliver slightly better benchmark performance compared to its predecessor.
When it comes to graphics, the Helio P65 features an ARM Mali-G52 2EEMC2 GPU instead of the ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU in the P60. AI performance is said to have gone up by two times compared to the previous generation and is now up to 30% faster when compared to direct competitor SoCs.
Another area where the new Helio P65 impresses is photography. The chipset supports dual-camera systems up to 16MP + 16MP or a single 48MP Quad Bayer sensor. There is also a new ISP design to enable faster as well as more secure facial recognition. Unfortunately, the chipset does not support 4K video recording. On the connectivity front, the major highlight is the upgrade to Bluetooth 5.0. Navigation is claimed to be improved as well, thanks to a new GNSS positioning engine.
