Your kids are about to get a headstart in computer programming as the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Education Ministry will be implementing coding lessons to the syallabuses of national schools starting from next year.
According to MDEC CEO Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, computer coding will not only be taught as part of a computer science subject, it will also be incorporated into the pedagogy of teaching, especially in science and math classes. Currently, 22 schools in the country has been testing out the upcoming syllabus since last year. That said, come next year, this syllabus will be fully implemented across the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR) and Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM).
“We will be launching this thing called the digital maker movement next month, where coding is embedded as an official curriculum in schools, starting from standard three onwards,” says Mahmood at a forum organised by Google Malaysia. “It’s very exciting because we will be one of the first few countries that will be doing this officially,” she added.
