Lenovo has finally pulled back the curtains of its latest pair of Motorola smartphones, and we’ve got to say, it is a rather interesting one to say the least. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce to you the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force.

In terms of specifications, both the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force are almost identical. The Moto Z and the Moto Z Force will sport a full metal unibody and measures at just 5.2 mm thin, making it the thinnest premium smartphone available. Both phones will also sport a 5.5″ QHD AMOLED Display. For performance, the phones will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM.

The difference between the Moto Z and Moto Z Force begins at the battery capacity. Where the Moto Z comes with a 2,600 mAh battery, the Moto Z Force sports a 3,500 mAh battery instead. Both phones will support Turbo Charging, allowing you to fully charge the phones’ batteries within a short period of time. The second difference is in the cameras. The Moto Z sports a 13MP rear camera, while the Moto Z Force sports a 21MP rear camera. Both cameras will come with features such as Optical Image Stabilization and Laser Auto Focus. The last difference is that the Moto Z Force will come with Motorola’s ShatterShield display, which causes to display to be shatterproof.

While the specifications are good and all, what makes the Moto Z and Z Force stand out is its 16-pin interface located at the rear of the phone. These pins are used for the add-ons called MotoMods. MotoMods, as the name implies, are mods that attach to the 16-pin interface at the back of the phone via magnets.

Lenovo has revealed a number of these mods such as a projector, a JBL speaker, a power pack and even casings. In the case of the projector and the speaker, these MotoMods come with their own batteries, allowing you to use them without draining the battery on the phone itself. The power pack on the other hand, functions as a 2,200 mAh backup battery that would provide the phones with an additional 22 hours of runtime. One important thing to note about the MotoMods is that Lenovo is investing long term into the concept. According to Motorola’s own Seang Chau, MotoMods will be supported not only by the current generation Moto Zs, but by future Moto Zs as well.

Alongside the introduction of the MotoMods, Motorola has also announced that it will be launching the Moto Mods Developer Program that will see them partner with the Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group to provide seed funding for certified developers as well as USD 1 million in equity funding for whoever submits a winning MotoMod prototype.

The Moto Z, the Moto Z Force and the MotoMods will be launched sometime in September.
