Apple reportedly using the 5nm A14X Bionic chip in its 5G iPad Pros

The 2020 iPad Pro that was launched last month has an A12Z Bionic chip instead of an A13X Bionic chip that some have been hoping for. But rumour has it the tech giant plans to release 5G versions of its iPad Pro and instead of using the A12Z or A13X chipsets, the tablets will be using an A14X Bionic chipset.

If so, does that mean Apple will skip on the A13 chipset for its tablet? We can’t be sure, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that Apple will use a 7.9-inch iPad mini this year that might be powered by the same chip found in iPhone 11 models. But if you’re looking forward to an A13X chipset, there might not be one this year.

We should also be expecting this year’s iPhone 12 lineup to feature the A14 Bionic chipset that will be using TSMC’s 5nm process. It’ll have a higher transistor density and is said to be able to match the speed of an Intel 6-core processor.

As for the iPad Pros that were just released, they may have similar GPU architecture, but the A12Z has all eight GPU cores enabled while the A12X only has seven out of eight. If you’re looking to upgrade from the 2018 iPad Pro, perhaps you should wait for this year’s 5G iPad Pro.
