Intel and MediaTek has recently announced a partnership to produce 5G solution for PCs, in order to catch up with their biggest competitor, Qualcomm.

According to the press release, Intel will be defining a 5G solution specification, while MediaTek will be developing the 5G modem that will be integrated into PCs. Intel will also be producing the suitable hardware and software integration that includes the OS host drivers to be paired with the 5G solution.

Both companies target to offer 5G connectivity to PCs in early 2021, in which Dell and HP will be the first OEMs to feature the 5G support. “With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, but we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined,” said MediaTek President Joe Chen.

Just earlier this year, Intel introduced Project Athena — an innovative program that’s supposed to offer laptops with a more advanced experience. However, these laptops are still not cellular-enabled. This might all change when the 5G solution is out in 2021.
