Intel isn’t joking around with its RealSense camera, as the company has just bought up Movidius for its specialty in AI and computer vision processors.
Movidius is very much a veteran when it comes to tasks concerning artificial intelligence. The company has been developing vision processors for technology such as drones and thermal cameras. Movidius has also worked with Google before, with both companies collaborating on projects such as the “Project Tango” augmented reality platform.
With Intel acquiring Movidius, Intel is hoping that Movidius could provide the expertise necessary to assist them with the RealSense cameras. One of the biggest plus point that Intel will get from the Movidius acquisition is access to low power, high-performance SoC platforms for its RealSense cameras. Of course, Movidius’ expertise in sectors such as “deep learning” and other A.I. related projects means that the company could be beneficial to Intel in the long run.
