Google is taking the music space rather seriously as the company has decided to consolidate Songza into Google Play Music as of January 31st, 2016.

First launched in 2007, Songza is a music platform that offered up expertly curated playlists based on the user’s mood or activity at the time via the Songza Concierge. Furthermore, users can also hunt for playlists by genre, mood or artists.

The platform was bought up by Google in July of 2014 and has since worked on integrating some of Songza’s features into Google Play Music. As time went on, Google Play Music has managed to implement numerous features found on Songza, making the two services highly similar to each other.

While the Songza brand and products would no longer be active starting from next year, the four Songza founders confirmed via an e-mail to their users that the team will work in tandem with Google on Google Play Music.

This move may be a signal that Google is ready to compete with other music streaming sites like Pandora, Spotify and Apple Music. Just recently, the company has announced that a family music plan will be available on Google Play Music very soon, allowing six family members to stream music for USD 14.99 a month. The service will also be compatible with YouTube Red, giving subscribers to either service access to the other.
