Google is no longer interested in sitting at the sidelines of the smartphone market as reports from The Telegraph shows that the tech giant is looking at developing and manufacturing its own smartphone.

Thus far, Google has yet to truly create their own smartphone. While the Nexus line is emdorsed by Google, the creation of these Nexus phones are mostly handled by partners such as Huawei and LG. According to the report though, this upcoming smartphone will be made strictly by Google, with the company taking more control over design, manufacturing and software. With Google producing a phone of their own, the company would also be able to control the software, securing the future of services such as the Google search engine and Google Play app store that run on it.

It isn’t too surprising that Google is looking at developing their own smartphone of course. Google has been busy developing its own hardware for the past few years, ranging from laptops, tablet computers and other gadgets. In fact, Google has just recently hired Rick Osterloh, former president of Motorola, to lead the company’s own hardware ambitions. As to why Google has decided to enter the smartphone market right now, Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight claims that Google is concerned that Android is fragmenting and Google wants to control Android more, much like Apple.”

Nothing else is known about this so-called Google Phone, but rumours are going around that this new device will be available by the end of the year.
