Google Maps is implementing a new feature that will make those with strict data quotas happy as users have spotted that a “Wi-Fi Only” mode will be coming to Google Maps.
According to users, this “Wi-Fi Only” option will be located in Google Map’s Settings menu and will be replacing the current “Offline areas” option. Once activated, Google Maps would then load the majority of data through Wi-Fi signals. However, the app will warn you that a small amount of cellular data will still be used, which means that you’re going to need to disable the data on your phone to ensure that no data is used during navigation.
Google has yet to officially announce this feature, meaning that the implementation of this feature may or may not be coming soon. Implementation may also change prior to the feature’s debut, meaning that it would be a standalone feature instead of replacing the current “Offline areas” option.
