Rumours are swirling around that Google’s parent company Alphabet and car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler are in the final stages of sealing a deal which would see both companies partnering up to tackle self-driving cars.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the talks between Alphabet and Fiat Chrysler have been going on for several months and have quite recently entered the late stages. Should everything work out as expected, both companies may officially announce their partnership sometime soon.

The partnership between Alphabet and Fiat Chrysler is a logical one. On Alphabet’s side, the company has been looking for an established company that could help it realize its vision for a self-driving car without needing to enter the car business proper. On Fiat’s side, the company has been “scouring the auto industry” looking for partners for either a merger or to offset production and development costs.

Of course, should Fiat and Alphabet agree to the partnership terms, Fiat would probably join Alphabet’s Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets which includes companies like Ford, Lyft, Uber and Volvo.
