Suicide is no laughing matter and Facebook knows that. To that end, Facebook has officially made its suicide prevention tools available to everyone worldwide.
Previously only available for certain users in America and the UK, Facebook’s suicide prevention tools would allow users to flag posts from friends who appear to be at risk for self-harm or suicide through a drop-down menu. Once the post is flagged, Facebook will provide a list of options to proceed, ranging from providing a list of numbers to various suicide prevention organizations, to sending a message of support anonymously. In certain cases, Facebook’s global community operations team may also “reach out to this person with information that might be helpful to them,” according to its Help Center.
Whatever the case, if you feel that your friend’s Facebook post indicates that something may be terribly wrong, you will now have an option to assist them without confronting them directly.
