Face Unlock confirmed for OnePlus 5

When OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 5T, it also introduced a couple of features new to its own Oxygen OS software along with the phone. One of the more notable features is Face Unlock, which is an alternative way to unlock the phone aside from the fingerprint sensor. Face Unlock, which is also rumored to make its way to the OnePlus 5, has finally been confirmed to roll out to the older flagship.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has announced on his Twitter account that Face Unlock will be rolling out to the OnePlus 5. The tweet comes with Christmas greetings, along with the mention that the roll out is due to popular demand.

Face Unlock has been tested to only take 0.5 seconds, and has been claimed to be swifter than Face ID on the iPhone X. It is however less secure than Apple’s facial recognition technology, as it only uses the front facing camera instead of a group of sensors, hence the reason why Face Unlock isn’t allowed to authenticate tasks such as purchases.

It is pleasant to see OnePlus still making sure that users of its older flagship are still being taken care of. This also goes to show that Face Unlock is achievable with a 16MP selfie camera plus software. Perhaps the OnePlus 3T will receive Face Unlock as well?
