On this beautiful morning, the folks at Digi has treated us fellow medias to the MRT Challenge to demonstrate its newly activated 900MHz spectrum, which has went live on the beginning of July, we were treated to a number of challenges, which include streaming videos and music below 40 metres underground, and the test went pretty well with speeds ranging from 30-40 Mbps and average ping of 15-20ms, daily commuters who ride on Malaysia’s Mass Rapid Transport system will finally experience smooth Internet speeds when they are on Digi’s 4G LTE network.

The 900MHz spectrum is aimed to improve indoor coverage and reaches further as compared to the current 1800MHz and 2600Mhz spectrum, the lower frequency spectrum is made to penetrate walls better, making it ideal for homes and office buildings with dead spots for cellular signals. As of now, Digi has activated the 900MHz spectrum on 15% of population coverage and is focused on residential areas, the telco aims to expand beyond that percentage throughout the end of this year.

Early February this year, the Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced to reallocate the 900MHz bands for four major telcos (Maxis, Celcom, Digi and U Mobile) to their 4G networks. After Digi, the rest of the players should be making some announcements really soon. For more information on Digi’s 900MHz specturm and 4G LTE coverage, head on over to digi.my/4GLTE.
