Many of you would be familiar with Gorilla Glass of course. After all, this glass is probably the reason your smartphone screens have yet to shatter into a million pieces after dropping it one too many times. Today, four years after Gorilla Glass 4 was first rolled out, Corning has unveiled the next generation of Gorilla Glass.

Aptly named Gorilla Glass 5, this version of Gorilla Glass is the toughest version yet. According to Corning, a Gorilla Glass 5 smartphone screen is capable of surviving a 1.6-meter drop on its face around 80 percent of the time. As for scratch resistance, Corning has stated that Gorilla Glass 5 will be on-par with Gorilla Glass 4 in that department.

“We recently did a survey, and it’s fairly obvious that everyone drops their phone. We find that the average height is over a meter high,” says Jim Steiner, Senior Vice President of Corning. “Based on our internal data on drop events, our data shows that Gorilla Glass 5 outperforms 4 by 1.8-times.”

Gorilla Glass 5 is commercially available now. As for devices that will implement Gorilla Glass 5, you can expect them by the fourth quarter of 2016.
