At SXSW, Bose unveiled a prototype AR smartglasses which is rather surprising as the company is an audio company, but the glasses do not stray far from their roots as it is said to add an audible layer of information and experiences to what you see rather than displaying information for the user.
The glasses work in a way where it will recognize what you are looking at and use audio to augment it. One example that was explained was that when you are looking at a historical monument, the company said that you might hear a speech from a famous person, or sounds that mimic the historical event. If you look at the sky, the glasses could let you know what the weather forecast is like. The company is taking it one step further by developing an AR platform that will bring it to other wearables and it can seamlessly be built into headphones, eyewear, helmets and more, without compromising their existing functionality.
Like all prototypes, there is no confirmed release date, pricing or whether it will release to the public, but it does offer a different approach to the AR experience by prioritising audio over visual.
