Chip makers ARM and TSMC are teaming up once again, and this time, they’re aiming to develop a 7nm chip.
This wouldn’t be the first time both companies have collaborated with each other. Previously, both ARM and TSMC have co-developed 16nm FinFET and 10nm FinFET chips with the latter expected to enter the market in the first quarter of 2017.
With the recent collaboration, both ARM and TSMC are aiming to be the first to get a 7nm chip out to the consumer market. Currently, both IBM and Intel are making their own 7nm chips, but the expensive cost of manufacturing means that 7nm chips won’t be hitting the market anytime soon.
“Future ARM technology designed specifically for data centers and network infrastructure and optimized for TSMC 7nm FinFET will enable our mutual customers to scale the industry’s lowest-power architecture across all performance points,” says Pete Hutton, Executive Vice President and President of Product Groups for ARM. “Jointly optimized ARM and TSMC solutions will enable our customers to deliver disruptive, first-to-market products.”
