Apple recently apologised to China users who had their Apple IDs stolen whereby hackers gained access to the App Store and other mobile payment systems.
Hackers could then make unauthorised purchases and also use apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay to transfer money to themselves. Apple believe that Apple users in China may have revealed their account details through phishing emails, in which hackers pretend to be from Apple, sending emails that looks official and manipulating users to believe that the emails are from Apple company.
Apple also confirmed that affected accounts were not secured with two-factor authentication, hence all Apple users should make sure they activate the two-factor authentication for increased security. Activating the two-factor authentication will require users to approve account access whenever there is a new device login, reducing the likelihood of phishing scams.

For users who are unaware of how to turn on their two-factor authentication, this is how you do it. Go to your Settings and tap on your Apple ID. Next, select Password & Security and tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication. Lastly, proceed by entering your phone number and verifying it.
