Apple’s iPhone has hit a landmark milestone today as Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the company has sold one billion iPhones.

Since the iPhone was first launched back in 2007, Apple’s own smartphone has been a dominant force in the smartphone market. It isn’t too much of an exaggeration to say that the smartphone was made mainstream thanks to the iPhone. In some countries, the introduction of the iPhone has led to a rapid growth in the smartphone market in a short amount of time.

The iPhone’s astronomical growth rate indicates that nearly half of those iPhones have been sold within the last two years. Roughly 472 million units were sold between Q3 of 2014, and Q3 of 2016. Of course, sales of the iPhone has since slowed down, but Cook believes that this slump in sales is temporary. With a new iPhone expected to be available in September, it’ll be interesting to see if sales of the iPhone will pick up once again.
