Android’s digital wallet platform Android Pay has finally made its way to the land of the rising sun, Japan. Now available in another Asian country, Android Pay is being launched alongside Rakuten Edy, which is already available in nearly half a million locations across the country, such as McDonald’s, Domino’s, Family Mart, Lawson and many more. These locations that currently support Rakuten Edy eMoney will support Android’s Tap to Pay technology as well.
In order to use Android Pay, your Android device has to be of Android version 4.4 Kit Kat and above. Japanese users will be able to get a new Rakuten Edy card up and running in a jiffy. Existing Edy users can just enable Android Pay on their accounts. When it comes to topping up some cash to the Edy card, users can either choose to use their credit card, or head to a store which supports Rakuten Edy top up.
Since it is only as easy as tapping to pay, Android Pay users will only need to tap their phones to the eMoney reader to pay, and at the same time view their current balance in their card. Purchase history is easily accessible on the app as well, for purposes of keeping track. Google will be partnering up with more eMoney providers in 2017 to expand its support across Japan.
