The amount of RAM that manufacturers are cramming into their smartphones have increased exponentially in recent years that smartphones are catching up quickly to the amount of RAM in laptops and computers. The OnePlus 3/3T packs a total of 6GB RAM underneath the hood, which sounds like an overkill. However, the first 6GB RAM handset is by Vivo – the XPlay 5. With that being said, a Huawei representative has claimed that there’s no need for more than 4GB of RAM in a smartphone.

Lao Shi from Huawei, has posted on his Weibo page, stating that 4GB of RAM is sufficient enough for a smartphone to operate smoothly. He even went on to say that most Huawei devices function better with 4GB instead of 6GB of RAM. Shi further suggested that optimization of the operating system and software is important, putting Apple as an example whereby the company has greatly optimized iOS for its own line of phones without needing huge amounts of RAM.

On another note, it is ironic how the Huawei P10 Plus has a high end 6GB RAM model, making Shi’s statement as a contradiction to what his company has made. The optimization of the Android OS with countless smartphones from manufacturers won’t reach the level of optimization of iOS and Apple’s own devices, which explains why manufacturers have to constantly spec their devices to the max for them to function smoothly. What do you think?
