Google first launched the Android Market nearly a decade ago when the operating system was still in its primitive stages, struggling to play catch up with Apple’s then more superior iOS. It was till 2012 that Android users had to go to different platforms if they wanted to download apps, music and e-books respectively. In that same year, Google decided to unite all Android content into one place we now call the Google Play Store.

Today, Google celebrates its 5th anniversary of the Play Store, boasting a bunch of impressive stats we should know about. Since its birth, the Play Store saw its user base grow to more than 1 billion active users from a total of 190 countries today. The Play Store is now the one stop place to get content such as apps, music and e-books for any Android device ranging from smartphones to Chromebooks.
