Revelations of worldwide tax evasion scandal has been making headlines throughout the world and at the centre of it all is Mossack Fonseca, the lawfirm where the ‘Panama Papers’ were first leaked. Initially reported to be done by a whistleblower, it seems that the law firm has done its own investigation and concluded that it was not an inside job, but a hack.
In a report by Reuters, Mossack Fonseca’s founding partner Ramon Fonseca has said that the company has ruled out an inside job and claim that it is the result of a hack. “We have a theory and we are following it,” says Fonseca.
Fonseca would further add that the firm has broken no laws and claim that their operations were legal. “Fifteen years ago, due diligence didn’t exist and they are judging us by other standards,” says Fonseca. “This is a tropical storm, like the ones we have here in Panama where once it passes the sun will come out. I guarantee you that we will not be found guilty of anything.”
So far, the leaking of the Panama Papers has led to Iceland’s Prime Minister being faced with calls for his resignation and UEFA’s offices being raided by the Swiss authorities for being implicated in the leak.
