Instagram rolls out two-factor authentication

Google has done it, Steam has done it, now it seems that Instagram will be joining them as the social media service will be rolling out two-factor authentication as a way to boost the security of their service.

Two factor authentication has been a long time coming for Instagram as the service was testing this security system all the way back in November of last year. Today, they’ve confirmed with TechCrunch that they’re ready to roll out this feature.

Much like the system used by Google, Instagram will require users to verify their phone numbers in order to use the two factor authentication system. Once their phone numbers are verified, Instagram will send an authentication code to their phone whenever someone tries to log into their account with the user’s e-mail and password. This system means that your account would be somewhat safe even though a hacker has acquired your login credentials through phishing or various other methods.

Instagram rolling out two factor authentication couldn’t have come at a better time as the social media service now has 400 million users which includes celebrities, brands and artists, some of which relies on them to earn a living.
