Back during the Google Pixel launch, Google mentioned that YouTube will be getting a VR app that would take advantage of the device’s Daydream VR platform. Well, if you’ve somehow managed to acquire a Pixel smartphone and a Daydream View VR headset, you would be pleased to know that said YouTube VR app is now available for download.
YouTube’s VR app will work on all YouTube videos of course. For videos with 360-degree footage, you’ll get the whole “inside the world” feeling that is the main promise of VR since the days of the Virtual Boy. For standard YouTube videos, the app would place you in a “theater mode” of sorts, allowing you to view the video from various perspectives. Your Youtube account can be accessed in the VR app of course, so you can begin browsing through your subscribed channels immediately after you login.
As we mentioned earlier, the YouTube VR app is currently only available on smartphones which are Daydream-ready. Seeing as Daydream-ready phones is currently limited to Pixel at the moment, it is highly unlikely that many people would be able to experience this app in Malaysia. Nevertheless, with other Daydream-ready phones scheduled to be released within the coming months, you can be sure that VR content will be available right as you pick up one of those smartphones.
