Microsoft recently released their Windows 10’s October 2018 update, version 1809, which includes several new features such as Your Phone app, an app that lets you text from your PC, and a dark theme for your File Explorer. There’s also improvements to Notepad and the built-in touch keyboard which works with SwiftKey.
Despite the new features, it is not advised for Windows users to upgrade their PCs for now, as many who updated their Windows stated that their files disappeared. Users posted on their social medias and forums that files such as documents, music and photos are erased.
A twitter user named Kevin Quintero suggested that this issue happens to those who saved their documents in the local storage instead of OneDrive. Reverting to your previous Windows version will also be ineffective as your files will not be recovered. It will be advisable for users to always remember to backup their files before any updates on any devices.
Microsoft, on the other hand announced that the Windows 10 PCs will not prompt its users to install the update till 9th October, so users who have been affected are most likely users who have initiated the update manually. There is also the issue of faster battery consumption which is caused by incompatibility of Intel Display Audio driver with the processor, and Microsoft is looking into the issue. Microsoft also stated that they have started blocking downloads of the new updates until the issues are resolved. In short, if you are somehow still able to update your Windows 10, don’t.
