Good news to all you Windows-based Netflix junkies! Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will now be able to support 4K content from Netflix via Microsoft Edge? There is a catch however, and it comes mostly in the form of hardware.
For the most part, streaming Netflix’s 4K content will require two basic things: a Netflix Premium account and a 4K-ready screen. If you fulfill these two requirements, the one last thing you need to play 4K content is a computer that is powered by a seventh generation Intel Core processor.
Microsoft’s Kaby Lake requirement is rather surprising considering that there are very few devices out in the market that has both a 4K screen and a Kaby Lake processor. As desktop Kaby Lake processors aren’t available yet, it seems that streaming 4K content from Netflix will be limited to certain devices for now. Of course, using a battery-powered device to stream 4K videos off Netflix will probably lead to heavy power consumption, so 4K Netflix and Chill sessions will probably be out of reach for many.
On the bright side, you now know the requirements from 4K content on Netflix, allowing you to build the machine needed to support it. Once the desktop Kaby Lake processors are out, you’ll be able to experience 4K Netflix without needing to get a laptop or 2-in-1 just for it.
