WhatsApp will cut support for Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS in 2018

WhatsApp is probably the most popular messaging app right now. The app has hit way over 1 billion downloads on the Play Store, but the company will be ending its support for a couple of operating systems beginning 2018. Blackberry OS, Blackberry 10 and Windows Mobile 8.0 users, you might want to take note.

The above mentioned operating systems are now being used by a handful of users, and have aged since. WhatsApp previously extended support for Blackberry 10 till December 31 2017, but will not extend any further after that. Blackberry has moved on to adopting the Android platform under TCL, which has much better software support and a larger user community. It also looks like Microsoft isn’t going to be making operating systems for the foreseeable future after an awful past with Windows Mobile. Hence it does make sense for WhatsApp to stop its app support for these platforms.

As of now, iOS 6, Nokia Symbian S60, Windows Mobile 7.0 and Android versions older than 2.3.3 have stopped receiving software support from WhatsApp. Blackberry OS, Blackberry 10 and Windows Mobile 8.0 will be added to the list in 5 days. WhatsApp has also indicated that some features may stop functioning at any time since they have stopped actively developing for these platforms. If WhatsApp is your go to messaging app, you might want to consider a new device.
