Valve releases CAD files for the Steam Controller

Valve is no stranger to crowdsourcing ideas for its games, but now, it seems that the company will also be crowdsourcing ideas for its hardware as well.

In a Steam Community announcement, the company has revealed that it will be releasing the mechanical CAD geometry for the Steam Controller. What Valve hopes to achieve with this move is that the community would held design accessories or even re-design the controllers themselves. Furthermore, if you have a 3D printer with you, you’ll be able to customise and print out your designs if you wish to do so.

As an example of what Valve hopes to achieve by releasing the CAD files for the controller, the company has released a few alternate designs for the controller’s Battery Door which allows users to carry a USB wireless receiver.

Valve has said that they would allow anyone to share their modified Steam Controller designs anywhere they want. For those who wish to turn their models into a full-fledged marketable product, they’ll need to talk to Valve before proceeding to the manufacturing stage.

Interested? You can get the CAD file here.
