Upcoming Google Pixel phone to cost more than RM2,600

Google’s Nexus phones were previously known as really affordable phones, but their price tags seemed to be hiking up at every Nexus refresh. While we shouldn’t be expecting Google to significantly reduce the prices of their phones, a source has claimed that the Pixel will come at a pretty premium price tag.

To refresh recent rumors, Google is said to have closed to book on their Nexus brand and that the new handset lineup will be named Pixel. Hence, the successor of the Nexus 5X will be known as the Pixel and the Nexus 6P will be replaced with a Pixel XL. According to Android Police, a source informed them that the smaller Pixel will come at a price of $649 (RM2,687.80), which will be significantly more expensive compared to when the Nexus 6P was first launched, in which was sold starting at $499 (RM2,066.58).

While the claim may seem absurd, Android has given the it a “confidence rating” of 6 out of 10, saying that they do trust the source. However, the source didn’t have any info or material that was able to back up such claim. The source also claimed that with the premium price tag, Google will be offering financing options for consumers to ease the burden, or rather the burn in their pockets. With that being said, a $649 Pixel would mean an even more premiumly priced Pixel XL, possibly at $100 more at the very least.

As always, do take this rumor with a huge grain of salt. Meanwhile, leaked images of the Pixel and the Pixel XL have appeared just yesterday, and both handsets are set for an October 4th unveiling at Google’s event alongside a 4K Chromecast and Google’s DayDream VR.
