UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has officially introduced its first lineup of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Malaysia, marking a significant step in the brand’s electrification journey as part of its long-term commitment to lower-emissions mobility.

The launch sees the arrival of three new models — the Toyota bZ4X, Hilux BEV, and Urban Cruiser — expanding Toyota’s electrified portfolio across passenger SUVs, urban mobility and commercial pickup segments. The move aligns with Toyota’s Multi-Pathway approach, where hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric technologies coexist to support a practical transition towards carbon neutrality in Malaysia.

The announcement was made at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, with the presence of Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Sim Tze Tzin, highlighting the importance of continued innovation and investment in Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem as the industry shifts towards cleaner mobility solutions.

Leading the lineup is the Toyota bZ4X, the brand’s dedicated battery electric SUV developed under its Beyond Zero philosophy. Priced from RM220,000, the bZ4X offers a driving range of up to approximately 480km, supported by improved battery efficiency and a BEV-dedicated platform. It features a newly developed eAxle system, advanced battery temperature management for faster DC charging, and a large 14-inch infotainment display with enhanced voice recognition. Combined with a spacious cabin and refined electric driving experience, the bZ4X is positioned as a practical EV for everyday Malaysian use.

Expanding electrification into the commercial segment is the Hilux BEV, priced from RM226,300. As Toyota’s first global retail battery electric pickup, the Hilux BEV brings zero-emission capability to industries that rely on durability and reliability. Built around a “Tough and Agile” concept, it comes equipped with a 12.3-inch TFT display, Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor systems, as well as the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3 suite. The model is targeted at both individual and fleet users across sectors such as logistics, construction, agriculture and government operations.

Completing the lineup is the Urban Cruiser, a compact electric SUV designed for city driving, priced from RM198,000. Developed under the “Urban Tech” concept, it combines SUV styling with efficient packaging and practical interior space. The vehicle features an integrated digital display system that merges the instrument cluster and infotainment interface into a single screen, alongside modern design elements such as 18-inch wheels, a panoramic roof option and a unique two-spoke squircle steering wheel.

The introduction of these BEVs represents a major milestone for UMWT, building on Toyota’s long-standing expertise in electrified technologies globally while adapting solutions to suit Malaysian driving needs. The company emphasises that electrification must remain practical and accessible, taking into account how vehicles are used across both urban and rural environments in the country.

Moving forward, UMWT will continue working with industry partners and policymakers to support the adoption of electrified mobility, while strengthening its nationwide network and aftersales support under its Best in Town commitment, ensuring Malaysian customers can transition confidently towards a more sustainable mobility future.
