The Solid State Technology Association has just announced the specification for Universal Flash Storage version 3.0 (UFC3.0) which will offer two times the performance of UFC 2.1, allowing data rates up to 11.6Gbps per lane. They have also introduced UFS Card Extension version 1.1 which comes with minor updates.
UFS is the storage standard that is used in most modern smartphones and in the automotive industry. UFS 3.0 will also come with features like temperature alerts, device error history and more targeted to the automotive industry. It is also said that it will have an operating temperature of -40 degrees to 105 degrees Celsius. With the new UFS Host Controller Interface, it will help in creating a common host controller to work with UFS hardware developed by manufacturers.
We should be seeing this new standard in future smartphones and automotive products that support the storage. At the moment, there are no companies that announced plans to adopt this new storage standard in their products, but once it becomes widely available, we will be seeing huge improvements in speeds for future smartphones.
