UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has marked a major milestone in Malaysia’s electrification journey with the official launch of the Toyota Vios HEV and Toyota Vios HEV GR Sport, while simultaneously announcing the localisation of hybrid battery assembly at its Bukit Raja manufacturing facility. The dual announcement underscores Toyota’s long-term commitment to making electrified mobility more accessible, practical and scalable for Malaysian consumers.

According to UMWT, pairing a nameplate Malaysians already trust with proven hybrid technology — now produced closer to home — reflects the brand’s strategy of accelerating hybrid adoption without disrupting everyday driving habits. Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, said the Vios Hybrid represents an important step forward in making electrified mobility more inclusive, describing it as the brand’s most accessible hybrid model that delivers advanced technology in a car Malaysians rely on daily. He added that the localisation of hybrid battery assembly supports Toyota’s Mobility for All vision by strengthening local industry, supporting national sustainability goals and ensuring long-term access to reliable, high-quality hybrid mobility.

Built on the foundation of Malaysia’s bestselling B-segment sedan, the Vios HEV integrates Toyota’s proven Hybrid Electric System into a familiar and practical package that has long served first-time buyers and mass-market customers. By introducing hybrid technology into an everyday model, Toyota aims to lower the barrier to electrified driving without requiring charging infrastructure or lifestyle changes, in line with its Multipathway strategy that balances efficiency, usability and real-world practicality.

Supporting the launch is UMWT’s investment in a local hybrid battery assembly line at Bukit Raja, capable of producing up to 30,000 battery units annually. The facility assembles 97 percent of battery components locally, helping to reduce secondary CO₂ emissions linked to import logistics while improving supply resilience and production flexibility.

The high-precision line incorporates automated inspection, intelligent foolproof systems, sound-checker functions, battery performance testing and full production traceability, ensuring every unit meets Toyota’s global Quality, Durability and Reliability standards. Beyond manufacturing, the initiative is expected to create high-value jobs, upskill local talent and strengthen Malaysia’s position in the regional automotive value chain.

Powering the Vios HEV is Toyota’s Hybrid Electric System, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine, an electric motor generator and a compact lithium-ion battery designed to last the life of the vehicle. The electric motor produces 80 PS and 141 Nm of torque, delivering smooth and immediate response from standstill, while seamless switching between engine and motor ensures intuitive acceleration.

Total system output is 111 PS, with a NEDC combined fuel consumption figure of 3.6L/100km. The self-charging hybrid system allows low-speed electric driving in traffic and uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery automatically, resulting in quieter operation, improved efficiency and lower emissions, especially in urban conditions.

Inside, the Vios HEV focuses on comfort and usability, featuring a 10.1-inch Display Audio system and a 7-inch hybrid-specific Multi-Information Display that shows energy flow, battery status and EV mode operation.

Hybrid-exclusive finishes, ambient lighting and thoughtful interior packaging ensure passenger comfort and luggage space are retained. Exterior colour options include Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic and Scarlet, while the Vios HEV GR Sport adds distinctive two-tone paint schemes with a black roof.

For buyers seeking a more dynamic look and feel, the Vios HEV GR Sport blends hybrid efficiency with Gazoo Racing-inspired enhancements. The variant features GR-specific aerodynamic elements, black exterior accents and unique badging, complemented by GR-tuned suspension and electric power steering for sharper handling and improved high-speed stability without sacrificing daily comfort. Inside, GR-exclusive touches include Leather Suede seats, contrast stitching, GR floor mats, a GR-branded steering wheel and soft-touch interior accents.

Safety is comprehensive across the range, with Toyota Safety Sense fitted as standard. This includes Pre-Collision System, Lane Keep Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor and Auto High Beam, along with a 3D Panoramic View Monitor to assist during parking and low-speed manoeuvres. The Vios HEV has also achieved a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, reinforcing Toyota’s focus on safety and dependability.

Both Vios HEV variants are backed by a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, as well as an 8-year unlimited mileage hybrid warranty covering the battery, inverter and power management unit, with optional extensions available for added peace of mind.

Priced from RM103,900 for the Vios HEV and RM109,900 for the Vios HEV GR Sport in Peninsular Malaysia, the new models become Toyota’s most accessible hybrid offerings in the local market. With the introduction of the Vios HEV supported by locally assembled hybrid battery technology, Toyota continues to drive the next phase of hybrid adoption in Malaysia by combining affordability, efficiency and long-term sustainability with investment in local manufacturing and talent development.
