Microsoft launched its first ever pure laptop yesterday at its press event in New York City. The Surface Laptop comes with premium design materials along with a decent price tag. The laptop sports a 13.5-inch display said to be fitted in a 13-inch overall form factor. The Surface Laptop was filled with the right ports as well when you look at its set of I/O, except for one – USB Type-C. USB Type-C is a future proof technology which has been added to most modern laptops, but not on the Surface Laptops.
According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft initially had the idea of adding USB Type-C to the Surface Laptop. In fact, two USB Type-C ports were included in one of the prototypes leading towards the final product of the laptop. But Microsoft seemed to have discarded that technology some time right before the final build of the Surface Laptop. A couple of designers have responded, with answers mostly relating to “a lack of maturity in USB-C with power and cable issues”, plus the lack of market adoption of the technology.
Instead of going with USB Type-C, Microsoft opted with the more conventional USB port and a Mini DisplayPort, which together isn’t a bad decision on Microsoft’s part. But with the increase of USB Type-C technology adoption, the Surface Laptop will likely face some minor issues in the long run. What do you think of Microsoft’s decision?
