Don’t dispose your old Game Boy cartridges just yet, the Smart Boy has returned, and it’s for real this time, not a prank. Hyperkin, the developers behind the Smart Boy actually announced the device as an April Fools’ prank, which caused a fair amount of ripples and waves among hardcore Nintendo Game Boy fans. But guess what, the company has decided that the Smart Boy is actually a good idea.
The Smart Boy was spotted by NeoWin at E3 last week, but it turns out that the device won’t be seeing the light of day too soon. We don’t have much details, but we do know that the Smart Boy supports Game Boy and GameBoy Color cartridges, plus you will be required to slot in your smartphone as well, since the device is technically just a smartphone holder cum emulator. Not only that, Game Boy titles are said to be rendered into color, to your smartphone’s LCD or AMOLED displays. Hence, the best of both worlds – a pretty screen and the authenticity of a Game Boy build with physical buttons on board.
Hyperkin has opened up pre-orders for the Smart Boy developer kit at $60 (RM243.23), asking for developers’ help to make this dream come true, turning the Smart Boy into a retail ready device for fans worldwide. The developer kit will start shipping in December this year. Are you a fan of the good old monochrome screen Game Boy’s?
