This phone sums up Huawei’s explosive launch event at London today. After unveiling the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 RS, the company went on to announce the Mate 20 X, which features Huawei’s largest ever screen on a smartphone. Made for both entertainment and play, Huawei’s first ever foray into the true phablet market seems very promising.

The Mate 20 X sports a similarly designed screen as the regular Mate 20, featuring a “dewdrop” notch which only house the front facing selfie camera. Sizing up at a whopping 7.21-inches, this Full HD+ OLED display makes Netflix consumption sound ever more pleasing than before. It is no surprise that with the Mate 20 X Huawei is targeting Samsung Galaxy Note users as well, providing an optional M-Pen for productivity purposes. Huawei’s brand new stylus will be sold separately.

Underneath the hood, the Mate 20 X is powered by Huawei’s HiSiliicon Kirin 980 AI processor, fabricated on a cutting edge 7nm process. It comes in 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. Expandable storage features Huawei’s own replacement of the micro SD standard – NM card.

The camera module of the Mate 20 X is the same as the Mate 20 Pro. It sports a triple camera setup on the back – a 40MP f/1.8 wide angle sensor, a 20MP ultra wide angle sensor and an 8MP telephoto lens. This combination on paper should produce images of flagship standard and nothing less. Do expect sharp and crisp selfies as well from the 24MP front facing camera.

The Huawei Mate 20 X features a liquid multi-dimensional cooling system with Vapour Chamber (VC) and Graphene Film which will be essential for long gameplay hours. Huawei claims this cooling system to keep the phone cool and to maintain smooth gaming performance. Speaking of gameplay, Huawei has packed a massive 5,000mAh battery in the Mate 20 X for it to take a power beating. It does sound about right given the 7.2-inch display. The handset will run on EMUI 9.0 on top of Android 9.0 out of the box.

Like many smartphones, Huawei has managed to squeeze this huge display in a compact form factor due to the Mate 20 X’s full screen design. The Huawei Mate 20 X will be available in Phantom Silver and Midnight Blue colorways. The phablet will be priced at €899 (RM 4,316.95) during its release on October 26th.
