Sony has been hiding a secret from its users for a rather long time but, it’s for a good reason. Apparently, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium comes with the same 120Hz screen as the Razer Phone. However, you need to be well versed in rooting, flashing and modifying the kernel of your phone to enable it. Even after you managed to do all that, there is a good chance that the phone will not function as intended.

Recently, a number of users have been playing around with the hidden mode, a mode that has been locked by Sony but is accessible via kernel modifications. From there, these users found that the Xperia XZ Premium actually supports three display modes, 1080p and 2160p at 60fps and a hidden 1080p at 120fps. Thanks to Sony’s Open Device program, developers have managed to build a ROM that will unlock the 120Hz mode on the phone, but the results have been inconsistent. Some users have reported that they can see an obvious difference, and some users are saying there is no change.

The mysterious 120Hz option extends to other Xperia phones listed below but the custom ROM does not support these devices:

  • Xperia X
  • Xperia X Performance
  • Xperia XZ
  • Xperia XZ1
  • Xperia XZ1 Compact
  • Xperia XA2
  • Xperia XZ2 Ultra

The only Xperia phone that does not have the 120Hz option is the Xperia X Compact. If you want to try out the custom ROM that will enable this feature for the Xperia XZ Premium, click here. Do note that flashing or installing a custom ROM wrongly will brick your phone, rendering it useless. Proceed with caution if you are planning to flash the custom ROM.
