Two years ago, Sony crowdfunded the FES Watch, a watch that is built out of e-paper. Today, Sony is looking at creating a sequel to the FES Watch, and it is once again relying on crowdfunding to do so.
Much like the original FES Watch, the FES Watch U is an e-paper watch. While the concept remains the same, the FES Watch U has received some upgrades. The watch now comes with a steel body, as well as a scratch-resistant sapphire glass on the premium version. Apart from that though, the FES Watch U is still the same always-on watch that comes with a customizable face and band thanks to its e-paper body. The use of e-paper also allows the watch to last for up to three weeks on a single charge.
While the watch looks good and all, getting one may prove to be a main challenge. As mentioned earlier, the FES Watch U is a crowdfunding project hosted on Sony’s own First Flight website. From the looks of things, the FES Watch U appears to be a Japan-only crowdfunding project, so if you want to help fund it, you may need to find someone you know who is based in Japan. If you’ve taken care of the geographical issue, you’ll then need to pledge between JPY44,710 (RM1,774) and JPY59,940 (RM2,378) to get a watch of your own. Should everything go right, you can expect your watch to arrive in April 2017.
As the initial FES Watch is a Japan-only product, we don’t really know if the FES Watch U will be available in the international market should Sony successfully crowdfunds the watch. Hopefully, Sony decides to bring the FES Watch U to the international market as well, because the concept is intriguing.
