Apple introduces the new Apple TV remote app for the iPhone, and a couple of new goodies and improvements to tvOS at WWDC 2016 today. Eddy Cue took the stage as he brought up new features that were added to tvOS 9.2.2, which is currently in beta for developers.
Starting off, Cue showcased the remote app for the iPhone, which pretty much works the same way as the Siri Remote that comes with the Apple TV, with a bonus of being able to type on tvOS from the comfort of your iPhone keyboard. Siri has also seen better inclusion and integration with tvOS, and the assistant can now search YouTube on top of the 650,000 movies and TV shows under Siri’s search library.
Apart from that, tvOS now has Single Sign-On, which eliminates the hassle of logging into individual apps one by one, repeatedly. With Single Sign-On, users will only need to enter their login details once, providing access to a number of apps on the Apple TV. According to Cue, Single Sign-On will be heading over to iOS other than tvOS.
Live Tune-in, another brand new feature rolling out to tvOS, allowing you to catch live streams from major networks such as Disney, CBS and ESPN. Live streams from these networks will pop open just by calling upon Siri. Live Tune-in will also be arriving to the iPad. Last but not least, Apple has added “Dark Mode” to tvOS for your comfort viewing goodness. Apple has boasted over 1,300 video channels available on the Apple TV now, plus 6,000 native apps in a short seven months. What do you think?
