Seagate’s 10TB hard drive is now old news as the company has one-upped itself by delivering a 60TB solid-state drive this week.
Made for datacenters instead of consumer use, Seagate’s 60TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD beats out Samsung’s PM1633a SSD in terms of storage space, with the latter sporting a nothing-to-sneeze-at 15.36TB capacity. Unlike the PM1633a which is a 2.5″ SSD, Seagate’s 60TB SSD is a 3.5″ drive. Seagate has stated that the drive has ‘twice the density and four times the capacity’ of the PM1633a, capable of holding up to 400 million photos or 12,000 movies.
Currently, this SSD is a ‘demonstration technology.’ As such, the device isn’t available for purchase…yet. According to Seagate, the company could release the product commercially as early as next year. While Seagate is keeping mum as to its price, the company says that the unit would be solt at “the lowest cost per gigabhyte for flash available today.” Just for reference, the aforementioned Samsung PM1633a has an asking price of USD10.000, so this 60TB SSD is going to be sold for a pretty penny.
