Rumor has been circulating that Samsung has been quietly hiring experienced self-driving car engineers and that they might announce a new autonomous vehicle research division.
Even though Samsung is denying the rumor, South Korean newspaper known as “The Korea Herald” has mentioned that an anonymous source from within the industry has told them that Samsung may announce the new division in early 2019.
The inside source has also reported that Samsung may be producing chips for the Tesla Model 3 next year on March. According to International Business Times reports, “It’s possible that Samsung is entering the self-driving car space to compete with its longstanding rival, LG Electronics, which recently announced an autonomous driving task force”.
As for now, there isn’t much information that could be taken from the rumors but there’s only inside source, however if this report is accurate, Samsung is expected to kick things off in 2019 and will begin mass production of these chips for use in Tesla’s Model 3.
