Most smartphone users nowadays would opt for handsets with screens sized from 5.0-inches to 5.5-inches before stepping into phablet territory. It is without a doubt that the standard display size for smartphones has been enlarged over the years, but some consumers still prefer smaller screen sizes. Hence, Apple’s decision to take a step back by manufacturing the 4-inch iPhone SE to cater to such consumers. Samsung appears to be doing the same with an entry level handset, known as the J1 Mini Prime.

Unfortunately for the J1 Mini Prime, Samsung has tuned down nearly every aspect of the handset with low end specs, turning it into a seemingly sub par performing device. First of all, there’s the 4-inch WVGA display 480 x 800 pixels. Its internals consist of a quad core Spreadtrum SC9830 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1GB of RAM and a mere 8GB of storage, which luckily is expandable via micro SD.

The Samsung J1 Mini Prime features a 5MP rear facing camera with flash, coupled with a VGA selfie camera up on the front. The phone packs a 1,500mAh battery, which sounds more than enough given the whole processing package. The J1 Mini Prime does pretty much resemble the 3.5-inch Galaxy Y from five years ago. The former is probably the 2016 version of the latter. The handset comes with a low price tag of $89.99 (RM402.03), but we can’t be certain as to whether will consumers get this phone for themselves. What do you think?
