Reddit, a social news networking service, or a forum of sorts, whichever way you look at it was founded back in 2005. Since the emergence of smartphones, Reddit has never had an official app for smartphone platforms, notably iOS and Android. In October 2014, third-party Reddit client app Alien Blue was acquired by Reddit, making it the official Reddit app for iOS users. In the Android ecosystem however, users still had to rely on third party Reddit apps such as Reddit is Fun, Ready for Reddit and BaconReader, till now.

Reddit was in the works of an official Android and iOS app, whose closed beta test began earlier this year in January and March respectively, had mixed reviews by beta testers. some reporting buggy interfaces of the app. Nevertheless, Reddit has officially launched an Android and iOS app to call its own. Since Alien Blue was already own by Reddit, the app was shut down on the App Store, replaced by Reddit’s new official app. Android-wise, no third party client applications of Reddit were acquired by the company. Hence, they’re here to stay.

Due to the fact that more than half of the 200 million-strong community of Reddit accesses the website from their mobile devices, transitioning them from mobile web browsers and third party apps to an official app should be an easy path. Taking its inspiration off Alien Blue, night theme is available for readers in the dark and also, the users’ choice of browsing in card view or compact view. Since the app is literally version 1.0 on both iOS and Android platforms, we’re expecting a number of bugs to be lurking around so do expect more bug fixes and additional features in the next update for both the iOS and Android version of Reddit.
