Qualcomm has just announced the Snapdragon 480 chipset that’ll bring 5G connectivity to affordable smartphones this year.
We’ve seen a slew of wallet-friendly 5G chips arrive last year, but the Snapdragon 480 will take the cake for being the most affordable while still offering – quite interestingly – flagship features.
Think 120Hz display support at FHD+ resolution, 64MP camera sensors, and support for Sub-6 and mmWave 5G connectivity thanks to the built-in Qualcomm X51 modem.
The chip is built on an 8nm platform and packs a Kryo 460 CPU which can be clocked up to 2 GHz. The chipset also comes with an Adreno 619 GPU which should do fine with modern-day mobile games like Mobile Legends and Call of Duty: Mobile.
The Snapdragon 480 also supports Quick Charge 4+ standards for fast charging; considering that this chip will power budget phones, and these devices usually pack large capacity batteries, proper fast charging support is important.
We should be seeing the Snapdragon 480 being used in a smartphone within Q1 of this year and we’re excited to see what affordable 5G smartphones can do.
