The race for faster speeds continues in the mobile world as Qualcomm has created a chip that is a step above the Snapdragon 820. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you the Snapdragon 821.

Claimed to be 10% faster than the Snapdragon 820, the Snapdragon 821 is a quad-core chip based on the custom Kryo cores. These Kryo cores will run at a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz, which is slightly faster than the 820’s 2.15GHz cores, and presumably where the 10% increase in performance comes from. While the main cores of the Snapdragon 821 is faster than the Snapdragon 820, Qualcomm made no mention of whether or not the two slower cores in the CPU will be faster than the 1.6GHz cores that are in the current chip. What will not change however is the modem as the Snapdragon 821 will continue to sport the same 600Mbps Snapdragon X12 LTE modem as the Snapdragon 820.

No official list of phones were given as to which phones will be running the Snapdragon 821 just yet, but rumours suggest that one of the upcoming HTC Nexus phones will be sporting the chip. Rumours aside, with Google’s Tango augmented reality platform going live by the end of the year, we expect the Snapdragon 821 to be powering the Tango-ready flagships.
