Last we heard, President Donald Trump has lifted the HUAWEI ban and allowed HUAWEI to buy US technology, but that’s not the end of the story. In a recent meeting between Trump and top technologies companies, both parties have come to an agreement that the US President will make timely decisions when it comes to sales requests from the tech companies to HUAWEI Technologies Co Ltd.
Despite the President agreeing to make prompt decisions when it comes to licensing requests, things may not be as easy going as it seems. A recent statement from the White House revealed that the executives are strongly concerned about national security and are wary of selling US telecommunication parts to HUAWEI. In addition, US companies currently aren’t allowed to sell their technologies and components to the Chinese manufacturer if they’re not given special licenses. That being said, if the licenses are approved, the whole process will only require a few weeks for the companies to sell US components.
For the licenses to be obtained by that companies, the government must ensure that no national security threats are present but recent reports suggested that HUAWEI has involvement in North Korea’s commercial wireless network, causing the US government to be more skeptical of sales to the Chinese tech giant.
Moreover, the government is trying to exclude HUAWEI from their 5G networks, convinced that they can spy for the Chinese government if they can access the networks. Other allegations include violation of Iran sanctions and theft of American intellectual property, in which HUAWEI has denied.
Simply put, although Trump and the US government have lifted the ban against HUAWEI, they have yet to put their guards down.
