Put that smartphone back into your pockets while you’re driving as the police is about to get a lot more proactive about drivers who use their smartphones while they’re behind the wheel.

First reported by The Sun, it appears that the Director for the Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement department, SAC Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus, has stated that the police are not taking the matter lightly and will crack down on motorist. “Motorists caught holding a mobile phone while driving will be issued summons. This includes using handphones while waiting at traffic lights or in traffic jams. Unlike criminal cases where the onus is on us to prove one’s guilt, this is a compound summons and it is up to the offenders to prove otherwise if they wish to dispute their case,” says Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai also added that the usage of mobile phones while driving has been identified as the main cause of road accidents in the country, with these accidents also occuring on those using two-wheel transports. Whatever the case, if you’re driving, keep your eyes on the roads. Your smartphone notifications can wait till you reach your destination.
