There’s so many brands trying to achieve a full display for their smartphones, resulting in various camera mechanisms such as the pop-up selfie camera, the rotating camera setup, the pivot rising structure and also the sliding mechanism. OPPO and Xiaomi both recently revealed that they’ve been working on under-display cameras, but seems like OPPO is taking the lead as it will showcase the new technology within this month.
As reported by MySmartPrice, OPPO has posted on Weibo confirming that they will be joining the MWC 2019 Shanghai exhibition on June 26. They will be revealing the new under-display technology for cameras that can replace both notches and added camera mechanism, which allows the phone to come with a full-screen display when needed.
When the camera is not in use, the phone shows a full-display as if there’s no front camera at all. When the camera needs to be used, the top part of the screen will be turned into a black screen where the hidden camera is, and users will be able to take pictures or record videos with it. Basically, it’s like an invisible camera that you won’t notice until you need it.
If the display is already fully developed, we could just be months away from being able to purchase a smartphone with under-display camera. The question is, are brands other than Xiaomi and OPPO also trying out under-display camera technology? If they are, they’re either being really quiet about it, or they haven’t found the solution yet. I’d choose to believe the former.
