The smartphone industry keeps trying to introduce full displays to its consumers, whether it is a pop-up selfie camera, punch-hole display or even sliding mechanism. Now, OPPO revealed on its Twitter and Weibo that the company has just succeeded in creating an under-display selfie camera technology.

No, it’s not similar to punch-hole displays. It’s a camera that’s literally under the display, so you won’t be able to see it unless you use your camera. In the video OPPO tweeted, the camera is non-existent during normal usage and will only appear at the top section of the display once the camera app is opened.

It was also reported by Engadget that OPPO VP Brian Shen said that there are some loss in optical quality of the camera and it remains unmatched to normal cameras. Shen also stated that “no new technology jumps to perfection right away,” which makes us believe that OPPO will continue to put in efforts to perfect the under-display selfie camera.

If OPPO succeeds in developing the under-display selfie camera, it could be possible for our future smartphones to have full displays without needing holes, sliders and pop-up designs.
