The OnePlus 5 has officially gone on sale in select regions worldwide since its launch just a little over a week ago. As impressive as the phone may sound, OnePlus’ latest flagship has gotten some mixed reviews, mostly centered around its design and video recording capabilities.
Apart from the obvious fact that the OnePlus 5 was dissed for its copycat design of the iPhone 7 Plus, the phone was also accused of not having Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for its dual rear camera combo. The cameras on the OnePlus 3 and 3T respectively were both equipped with OIS, but it is now missing on the dual cam setup on the OnePlus 5. Instead, OnePlus opted with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), which relies more on the software itself. This has caused poor stabilization when recording video in 4K resolution, according to a series of reviews so far. But OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has explained the situation in a reply to a post on Reddit.
Pei claims that OnePlus did not have enough time to equip the OnePlus 5’s video recording with EIS, so the company focused on 1080p video for the rear and front facing cameras instead. However, he said that a fix in the form of a software update will be arriving soon, finally utilizing EIS when recording 4K video.
This is good news for brand new users of the OnePlus 5, include potential buyers. Regardless, we all do agree that OIS works much better than EIS. What do you think?
