In a move that isn’t all that surprising, Nvidia and Baidu have announced a partnership today that would see both sides working together to develop an artificial intelligence platform for self-driving cars.

The announcement was first made at the Baidu World Conference where Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang took to the stage to announce that both companies will be merging their individual technical capabilities to create a new self-driving car architecture from scratch. Nvidia isn’t exactly new to the car tech industry as the company has been showcasing their Drive PX supercomputer for years now. Meanwhile, Baidu has been testing out various forms of automated driving vehicles in both the United States and China.

With Baidu looking to have a self-driving shuttle roaming the roads of China by the end of 2018, this partnership may prove to be a fruitful one for both sides. Should everything proceed according to plan, Baidu aims to mass produces autonomous cars in five years’ time.
